Back in his theater days, my partner often described his work using the phrase, “hurry up and wait.” Lately, my whole life has been a game of hurry up and wait.
Hurry to the doctor because the pain and fatigue are so bad.
Wait months for test results and diagnostics to come through.
Hurry up and send over you resume for a potential work opportunity.
Wait weeks for an email about setting up a meeting.
Winter and spring were long, hard seasons for me. Thankfully, this summer is bringing a lot of promising potential and hopeful news. It’s exciting and refreshing. It’s also taking so fricking long. Sure, a few weeks here and a few months there may not be that much time in the larger scheme of things, but when you’re waiting? Well, then time stretches, and every day becomes a lifetime.
I start every morning with a daily tarot and rune pull. Yesterday, my tarot card was the Two of Wands—the card of looking to the future and dreaming of what’s possible, while not yet being in the place to take action. It’s a reminder that before we move toward our dreams, we must take time to envision what it is we truly want. In other words, it’s the card of waiting.
For my rune, I pulled laguz, which translates to “water” or “lake”. When I think of water, I think of the depths of the ocean. The mystery. The unknown. The promise of the horizon and the gentle flow of the current.
In Queering the Runes by Siri Vincent Plouff, they share the following poem about laguz:
Water
eddying stream
and broad geysir
and land of the fish
As I read that line, “and land of the fish”, I heard spirit whisper, “you, fish, are at home in the water”. For those who aren’t as steeped in astrology lingo as I am, Pisces are often referred to as “fish”, given that the constellation looks like two fish dancing.
Unsurprisingly, spirit is right. I am at home in the water.
I’ve built a whole life/career around exploring the unconscious and finding comfort in the mystery. I know that the unknown is not some awful force to be feared, but rather, an invitation to grow.
Sitting with the unknown can be terrifying. The future is obscured, the past Is long gone, and we’re floating in an amorphous in between with no sense of how this chapter will end. But this pause is a gift. How often in our busy lives do we really have time to daydream? If we want to build toward the best version of our lives, we have to take the time to let our imaginations run wild and dream up all that’s possible. What better time to do that than when we’re waiting?
There’s a reason water is associated with the dream realm. We must allow ourselves to sink into the murky depths of the unknown if we wish to dream up something new.
If you, like me, are stuck playing the waiting game, I feel you. It’s hard. It’s frustrating. I wish I could press a button and get us all the answers we seek.
But I can’t.
Instead, I’ll hold out my hand and invite you to swim deeper with me. There’s something to learn here—a dream waiting to crystallize. So, let’s keep floating and see where the current takes us.

Make Time to Daydream
This may not sound like a magical act, but it’s the first (and arguably most important) step in any manifestation practice. If you can, I recommend doing this in water. Draw a bath, float on the river, sit in a lake, etc. If this isn’t available, find another place that feels gentle and expansive.
Don’t bring a journal. Don’t take voice notes. Just close your eyes and imagine. What would your life look like if anything was possible? What would you dream if there were no limits?
You might be surprised by what you learn.
I finally received a diagnosis this week, and it’s been a lot to take in. One of the best practices for the chronic condition I’ve been diagnosed with is water-based exercise. After months away, I finally went back to the pool (the same day I pulled the laguz rune, coincidentally 😉) and it felt SO GOOD. I haven’t been as pain free as I was for those 45 minutes in months, and the fish in me wished I could have stayed in that water forever.
