March is Embracing Aligned Community

The season of the hermit is coming to a close. As spring equinox approaches, we start to crack the windows and let the soft breeze of March shake off the stagnancy of winter. Soon there will be sunshine, blossoming flowers, and rushing rivers filled with snowmelt. Not yet, but soon, and March brings the promise of spring like a sweet spoonful of honey on our tongues.

March Theme: Three of Cups

I often call the Three of Cups the “card of the dinner party.” This card has the energy of going out for drinks with the girls, or long chats over coffee with a best friend. It’s a potluck with blooming flowers on the table and laughter long into the night. Three of Cups is about surrounding yourself with the people who, quite literally, “fill your cup.”

January and February were times to slow down, turn in, reflect, and connect with yourself and your spirits. Now, as we step into March, we’re being invited to step out of the house and reconnect with the people that bring us joy. I’m seeing the image of someone brushing the dust off their shoulders, like we’re literally brushing the solitude and stillness of winter away as we welcome in the playful curiosity of spring.

This month, there will be a call to spend time with the people you care about. There will be opportunities to gather in community and celebrate the small wins, even if that win is simply the longer days and warmer weather. You made it through winter and now, it’s time to raise a glass and cheers what’s yet to come.

What to Lean Away From: Seven of Pentacles

Throughout fall and winter, I was pulling a lot of cards in both the collective monthly readings and in one-on-one readings for clients that focused on what we were building. It was a time to build with intention, focus, and dedication. Now, we’re being asked to put that building on pause.

The Seven of Pentacles here doesn’t feel like a call to abandon your in-progress projects, but rather, to step away from the constant tending of your garden and go have fun for a minute. Consider the saying, “work hard, play hard.” We’ve been working hard for months, and this placement of the Seven of Pentacles with Three of Cups as our theme is the call to spend March giving the “play hard” half of that saying a little TLC.

Too often in this capitalist hellscape, our career gets conflated with our identity. We start to believe that who we are in this world, and what we’re worth, can be boiled down to what’s on our LinkedIn profile. March is a call to remember how big you are, and that the weight of your soul cannot be measured by something as small as a job—even a job you love.

Give your work, or whatever you’re building and pouring your energy into, a break this month. Have fun. Surround yourself with friends. Get out of the house. Try a painting class (as we’ll explore in the next section). There’s more to life than what you build, and March wants us to remember that.

What to Lean Towards: Ace of Wands

When we take a break from the constant nurturing of our careers (or whatever foundations you’ve been building), we create space. The Ace of Wands tells us that we need this space to rediscover, and reconnect with, our passion. I don’t mean our passion project. I mean the very essence of passion. The joy of discovering a new hobby. The childlike wonder of watching a particularly colorful sunset. The spark of connecting with someone, be it a new friend or a potential partner. The Ace of Wands suggests that the more we create space for play and leisure this month, the more those sparks will find room to breathe and grow into roaring fires.

The beauty of the Aces in tarot (and the curse for those of us who love control) is that we are not in charge. The opportunities of the Aces do not come from within, but from the “hand of god” reaching down and saying, “Hey, have you tried this?” So, the invitation of March is not one of force, pushing, and making things happen. Rather, it’s one of keeping an open mind as you explore everything that comes your way and, when something ignites that spark of passion within, grabbing hold and seeing what happens next.

If the Seven of Pentacles in the “to lean away from” position was telling us that we need to consider our identity beyond the work we do and the things we build, the Ace of Wands in this placement is suggesting that we may find parts of that identity in the things that excite us. With the context of the Three of Cups framing the whole of March, one tangible iteration of this might look like getting out of the house, doing fun things with friends, and seeing what new hobbies or passions emerge unexpectedly. Perhaps a paint and sip class will reveal a deep passion for painting; maybe a movie night will help you realize you love film; or maybe a dinner party with friends will unveil a secret hobby of arranging flowers. Who knows? But this month invites you to be open to the new and find out.

The Root: The Hermit

But Sarah, why all this talk of identity? Well, at the root of this reading, we have The Hermit, and what is The Hermit if not someone who identifies with who they are at the core, not what they do on the surface? The Hermit is the card of the year for 2025 and thus the energy of the Hermit shapes all the chapters we move through this year.

The Hermit is a card that invites you to turn away from the chaos and noise of the outside world to turn within. It’s a card of learning to listen to your intuition and to know yourself deeply and fully. Contrasted with the theme of March, the Three of Cups, this reads as a reminder that even as we’re being invited to get out and gather with community, we’re doing so in service of this greater inquiry into who we are at our core. We’re not just building community; we’re building deeply aligned community.

We’re being asked to look beyond our work and take in the sum of our lives. The people we love. The community we resonate with. The hobbies and passions that excite us. How do these things inform our identity?

At its root, the question of March is this: how can aligned community bring us back to ourselves?

Bottom of the Deck: 10 of Cups

I don’t always look at the bottom of the deck, but it’s been coming up a lot in readings lately and during our collective reading for March, I took a peek and found the Ten of Cups.

To me, this is a call to remember what our goals are. The point of life isn’t to work. The point of life is to live. To be loved. To have fun. To try new things. To feel. To experience all the wild, wonderful things that being human allows us to experience. So, when March asks us to take a pause from what we’re building to focus on the people around us and the things that light us up, it is a reminder to reconnect with the true joy of being alive.

Life is so much more than work, and March invites us to take time to not just remember that, but to experience it in the small joys of spending time with people we love.
