June Theme: Nine of Cups
It’s been a tough couple of months. On the larger scale, we’ve seen what happens when hate is given free reign. Almost every day there’s some new terrible update on the news, and it’s hard to hold onto hope amidst all that.
As if that weren’t enough, many of us have been grappling with struggles on a more personal level, too. This winter and spring have held deep grief for many of us. Some have said goodbye to loved ones—whether through loss, distance, or the quiet unraveling of a relationship—while others have been busy dealing with suboptimal mental and physical health, unexpected job loss, nasty breakups, toxic friendships, disappointing dates, or just a general sense that everything that can go wrong is decidedly doing exactly that. It’s been a long season, and hope has been hard to come by.
For June’s theme, we pulled the Strength card, but I’m receiving this less as a message that we will need strength to get through this month, and more that we are being asked to recognize how strong we’ve been thus far. Because if you’re reading this, that means you’re still here. Perhaps your shoulders sag under the weight of all that has passed, and maybe it’s hard to keep the tears from gathering in your eyes most days, but you are here. And what is that, if not strength?
June brings with it a call to look at that bruised and exhausted reflection in the mirror and feel pride. You kept going. You kept trying. You are still here, and things will get better. They always do.
The story of the tarot is rooted in the belief that everything is cyclical. With every win, there is a loss. With every time we fall, there is a chance to rise again. June tells us there is hope on the horizon. The tides will turn in your favor soon, but while you wait for that day to come, don’t discount how much it’s taken to get where you are. You are so strong, and even when it feels like you’re barely making it through, you’re still trying.
That is beautiful, and that is worth celebrating.
What to Lean Away From: Two of Cups
For a while now the cards have been encouraging us to focus on matters of the heart. In fact, our May “to lean towards” card was the Two of Cups that now appears in our “to lean away from” position! Back in October the cards asked us (via the Five of Cups) to start reconsidering which friendships nourish us, which habits support our emotional needs, and how we can better tend to our sensitive souls. Ever since, the cards keep calling us to tend to our community and build strong, supportive methods of taking care of ourselves and others when the feelings become too heavy to carry alone.
Two of Cups moving into the “lean away from” position doesn’t necessarily mean we should stop thinking about our community or abandon our self-care. Rather, it suggests that these areas of our life no longer need active effort. When we consider the theme of the month—Strength—I think we get an even more specific and applicable message:
Trust the strength of your relationships. Trust the community you’ve built and the habits you’ve cultivated to tend to your heart. You don’t need to expend energy forging new bonds or trying out new ways to care for yourself; you’ve already done that work. Now is the time to trust that your foundation is strong and that you can turn your energy elsewhere without losing what you’ve cultivated in your self and in your community.
What to Lean Towards: Seven of Pentacles
Going from there to the Seven of Pentacles, the message gets even clearer. It’s time to take our focus from the realm of the cups (matters of the heart; relationships; emotional fulfillment) and turn our attention to the realm of the pentacles (our work; our bodies; our house and home; what we’re building and what puts food on the table).
Specifically, Seven of Pentacles asks us to turn back to the things we were busy growing in the fall, before the bomb that has been November-through-April hit us, and we were forced to set some things aside. The seeds you planted in the fall may have been left untended for some time, but the field has not gone fallow. There is still life there, and it is time to turn our attention toward cultivating what it is we want to build in this lifetime.
Seven of Pentacles also comes up when we have a decision to make: do we double down on what we’ve been building for years, or are we ready to trust what we’ve created and turn our eyes to the unknown? Again, our theme card sheds some light here. Perhaps it is time to trust the strength of what you’ve built. Trust those foundations will hold, and trust that they can support you as you widen your eyes to whatever new ambitions have been pulling at your heart strings.
It’s not only okay to dream; it’s absolutely necessary. It is through dreaming that we find our way to a life worth living.
Allies: Lime and Condor
Lime: Luck
One of my favorite things about the Green Witch Oracle is that it never fails to give me a plant that’s in season, and Jun’s ally was no exception. Afterall, what better time to build a relationship with the delicious magic of lime than during the warm summer months?
Lime shows up both as an oracle and as an ally. As an oracle, it is informing us that our luck is starting to turn and giving us hope for better days to come. As an ally, we can work with Lime to help call in this luck to support whatever ambitions we pursue. This can look like adding lime to your water, offering lime at your altar, baking or cooking with lime, or doing a lime ritual.
One ritual that came through at Tarot + Tea was to take half a lime and place a clove in each quadrant of the lime, stating a goal or ambition you’d like to see flourish with each clove. Then, put the lime in a bowl (open side down) under your bed for three, five, or seven days. If under your bed is not an option, put in the room where you expend most of your energy (this can be the kitchen, your office, your living room—whatever feels right to you). When you’re done, compost or dispose of the lime responsibly.
Condor: Receive Messages from Spirit
This sacred bird is known across traditions for its connection to life, death, and the realm of spirit. It’s a fascinating and potent energy to work with. As an oracle and animal ally for June, Condor invites us to be open to the many ways Spirit communicates with us.
Of course, divination and journeying are great ways to connect with the wisdom of Spirit, but it feels like we can expect more subtle forms of communication this month. Think songs coming on that say exactly what you need to hear, or a certain animal appearing in your line of sight right as you’re mulling over how to handle a situation. Spirit is constantly communicating with us, and Condor asks you to keep your eyes open to receive those messages.
In particularly, Condor and Lime coming up together tell me that, should you notice and heed these messages, they may point you in the direction of opportunities that are in support of your dreams, goals, and ambitions.
Guidance: Time to Go and Coven
Time to Go
On the one hand, Time to Go can refer to the need to leave a bad situation. It comes up when we have been dragging our feet in a relationship, job, or situation that is no longer in service of our happiest, healthiest life. When the Time to Go card appears, it is our spirits telling us to stop dragging our feet and get out already. You cannot pursue the ambitions you have for your life without cutting the cords that bind you.
On the other hand, Time to Go can be less about leaving something behind and more about moving with purpose toward your goals. It’s the card that comes up when you’ve packed the bags but can’t stop triple-checking that you remembered your passport. The Time to Go card says you’ve done all you can to prepare, and it’s time to get going. Take the risk. Chase the dream. Believe the impossible can become your reality, and stop holding yourself back.
Coven
Lastly, we pulled coven, a card that reminds us of how our power doubles when activated in community. Quite simply, this card is a call to make magic with others. You can do rituals and spell work and manifestation all day, and that’s a beautiful use of your gifts, but there’s something special that happens when we create magic with another person.
When everyone turns their attention to the same goal, the intentions we cultivate are given far more power than any one of us can access in the solitude of our own home. This is your call to work with others when crafting your magic this month, as the whole is almost always more than the sum of its parts.
