You know that feeling of finally returning home after a long trip? Everything you own smells like stale hotel room air, and you never realized how much you could miss a refrigerator. Then, finally, you open the front door and let out a long sigh as you drop the heavy weight of your luggage. You take a shower and know exactly what to expect from the water pressure; you crawl into bed and the mattress is dented to perfectly cradle your body.
This is the sacred sweetness of coming home.
This is February.
February’s Theme: Ten of Pentacles
It’s usually good news when the Ten of Pentacles shows up in a reading, and especially so given that this is our theme for the coming month. Tens in the Tarot symbolize the completion or culmination of an energy, and in this case, that energy is all things related to home, foundations, stability, and security.
The pentacles represent our finances and career, yes, but it’s so much more than that. It’s all the things that keep us resourced. It’s our connection to the earth and the land on which we live. It’s where we find safety and comfort. It’s the seeds we plant and the gardens we grow. In sum, it’s our home.
With the Ten of Pentacles as our “theme” card, we’re getting encouraging news about what February will bring. The Ten of Pentacles suggests that some of the seeds you’ve planted will finally be ready to harvest, especially in matters related to your foundations and security. We’re talking about things like finally selling that house that’s been on the market forever or closing on your dream home/signing a lease for the perfect new apartment. Or perhaps getting a job after months of sending out applications or receiving some much needed and unexpected financial support that helps you to finally climb out of debt. After months of feeling lost at sea, the Ten of Pentacles implies that come February, we will finally get our feet under us.
While this is all true, I’m also receiving the message of the Ten of Pentacles this month on a deeper level. In this case, it’s coming through to me as a sense of rooting into your foundations. It feels like February will offer us more opportunities to connect with what grounds us. It’s an opportunity to root more deeply into our local communities and discover what it means to feel truly safe and supported by the places and people we call home.
What to Lean Away From / Towards:
Ace of Cups & King of Cups
I usually talk about what to lean away from and what to lean towards in two different sections, but these cards are in such direct conversation with one another that it felt necessary to discuss them at the same time.
On the left, in the position of “what to lean away from”, we have the Ace of Cups. In contract, on the right, in the position of “what to lean towards”, we have the King of Cups. In any given suit in the tarot, the cards go from Ace to Ten, then Page, Knight, Queen, and King. So, in this spread we have both the start of the cups journey as well as its culmination represented side by side.
With the ace, we have an initiation into the realm of the cups. Aces in the tarot all feature this “hand of god” imagery, and they have to do with new opportunities or experiences catapulting us into the path ruled by the suit in question. In the case of the cups, this is matters of the heart: our relationships, our emotions, what fulfills us, etc. It’s quite literally about what fills our cup, as the saying goes. In addition, the cups are tied to matters of intuition, the dream realm, and our creative expression.
While the Ace of Cups is just beginning to open to new relationships, dabble in intuitive practices, and explore new means of creative expression, the King of Cups is established in his relationship to all matters ruled by the watery realm of this suit.
The kings in the tarot are the rulers of their domain (or rather, their suit). They have mastered the lessons therewithin and are using what they’ve learned to guide others. They are teachers, mentors, and leaders who use their hard-earned wisdom to point the compass for their community to follow.
This movement away from the Ace of Cups and towards the King of Cups asks us to stop thinking of ourselves and initiates on this journey, just dipping our toes into the waters for the first time, and instead to swim freely, knowing that we are at home in these watery depths.
We are asked to trust our intuition not only in how we move through our own lives, but in how we engage with and guide those around us. We are asked to honor all the work we’ve done to build healthy relationships with our loved ones, to recognize our own emotional growth and maturity, and to remain grounded in our deep inner knowing.
Most of all, the call to move away from the Ace of Cups and to move towards the King of Cups is an invitation to stop searching for signs and guidance from the universe and, instead, learn to trust our own intuition and inner wisdom.
If the Ten of Pentacles is about bringing us home to what supports and sustains us, then the King of Cups is about coming home to our own heart and trusting her fully.
To Keep in Mind: Five of Swords
As we sat with this collective reading during last month’s Tarot + Tea, something slowly revealed itself to me: we can no longer discuss matters of the collective without talking about what’s happening in the global and political landscape. While the rest of this spread speaks to the energetics most of us will be moving through in our personal lives, the bottom card touches on what we ought to keep in mind as we consider the state of the world at large.
The Five of Swords pictures a figure who has just come out of a battle victorious and must now ask themselves if the win was worth what it cost them. With swords representing mind, beliefs, and ideals, this card speaks to a moment when we’ve gone to bat for something we believe in and must now ask if holding onto these ideals was worth what we had to give up to win this fight.
To me, this card showing up in this placement foretells that there will be many who are experiencing regret come February. Personally, I see this most clearly represented in people’s relationship to the recent election. So many people ran to the polls to vote for Trump because they were unwilling to challenge their beliefs about immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community, abortion, race, or whatever other ideals the Republican ticket represented in their eyes. But now, as we witness the horrific abuses of power coming out of the White House, many of these folks are having to ask themselves: was it worth it?
Of course, this is only one example of how the Five of Swords can show up, and I do get the sense that this regret and grief will be present for many folks this month, I also think the Five of Swords will show up in many different ways for different people. Regardless of how it shows up, it seems a lot of folks around us are going to be facing a difficult reckoning with regards to their past choices.
With the King of Cups in our “what to lean towards” position, we are being asked to meet these people with compassion. What would it look like to move heart-first? What would it look like to lead with love, even if you aren’t quite ready to forgive.
Animal Ally: The Macaw
Celebrate the Power of Expression
Between our King of Cups pull and the face that February is shaped by Aquarius and Pisces season, I can’t say I was surprised to receive a message about self expression. I think the invitation from our animal ally, The Macaw, is quite simple:
Find creative and aligned ways to express yourself this month. You have a unique and beautiful voice, and we’ll all benefit if you share it more freely with the world.
